301 vs 304 stainless steel.
301 is a high-strength grade for springs and structural strip. 304 is the all-round corrosion-resistant grade. In the local market, 301 has been sold under the 304 label, and the buyer rarely finds out until the metal stains or cracks.

Why the mix-up is costly
Finished 301 and 304 sheets look alike. But 301 has less chromium and nickel, so it resists corrosion less well, and it hardens quickly when formed, so it can spring back or crack on tight bends. Buyers who pay 304 prices for 301 get a weaker, shorter-lived product.
How to check
- Ask for “304” on the invoice and the mill test certificate with the heat number.
- Have the chemistry tested. A nickel reading in the 6–8% range points to 301, while 8% or more points to 304.
- Be wary of sheet that is unusually hard or springy, and of prices well below the market.
Our advice
Use 301 where its strength is the point, and only when it is sold as 301. For anything that must last in damp, food or visible conditions, specify 304 and insist on proof.

ভুল হলে কেন ব্যয়বহুল
ফিনিশ করা 301 ও 304 শিট দেখতে একই। কিন্তু 301-এ ক্রোমিয়াম ও নিকেল কম, তাই ক্ষয়রোধ কম। আবার ফর্ম করার সময় এটি দ্রুত শক্ত হয়ে যায়, ফলে কড়া বাঁকে ফেটে যেতে বা ফিরে আসতে পারে। 304-এর দামে 301 কিনলে দুর্বল ও কম টেকসই পণ্য পাবেন।
কীভাবে যাচাই করবেন
- চালান ও হিট নম্বরসহ মিল টেস্ট সার্টিফিকেটে “304” লিখিয়ে নিন।
- রাসায়নিক গঠন পরীক্ষা করান। নিকেল ৬–৮% দেখালে সেটি 301-এর ইঙ্গিত, আর ৮% বা তার বেশি হলে 304-এর ইঙ্গিত।
- অস্বাভাবিক শক্ত বা স্প্রিংয়ের মতো শিট এবং বাজারের চেয়ে অনেক কম দাম নিয়ে সতর্ক থাকুন।
